Jen in Keene, NH says that the chicken and turkey slaughter helps her "witness how the birds are treated throughout their life (and death). In addition to bringing me closer to my food, it brings me closer to the farmers and the community of volunteers and workers...Working together bonds us."

Vicki in Fort Bragg, CA, has started canning and drying the food she grows with her husband. "September this year was tough - I was on call at the hospital 14 days, and on the weekends I was home, I was up much of the night canning. I did about 40 quarts of zucchini pickles, 20 quarts of tomatoes."

David in Asheville, NC, says that since his garden is right outside his dining room, "the vegetables we ate were grown less than 10 feet from our table...With each meal, we figure out what percentage of it came from our own garden. Often, it's over 75%"

Janet and Lori in Asheville, NC, have a micro urban farm that produces enough to feed their family. "We are also foster parents and use our experience to get a number of urban children closer to the earth through farming with us," writes Janet. "This is one day of harvest from our summer garden."
