Van Jones moves fast — so fast, sometimes, that the print world can’t keep up. For example, take this exchange, from an interview with Yes! Magazine:
Sarah van Gelder: Are you planning to be part of the Obama administration?
Van Jones: Uh, no! (laughs) No! I am planning to be a part of the Obama Nation as a whole, to bring grass-roots power to bear.
Even though we have a great president, we also need a great popular movement to support that president. All of us can’t go into the White House and hang out there. We’ve got a lot of work to do out in these communities, and that’s what I plan to do.
That interview — with its definitive statement — was published on the day Van announced that he was going to be Obama’s Czar for Green Jobs — aka special advisor at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
So, why did he change his mind?
In our upcoming Labor Day episode, Majora Carter interviews Van and gets a chance to ask why he’s taking a role inside the governmental process, why he left his organization, Green for All, and why he left grass-roots organizing to become a public servant.
